HYPERADAPT 1.0

STEP INTO THE FUTURE

Welcome to the future of footwear. The Nike HyperAdapt 1.0 is the first fully-functioning athletic shoe that electronically adjusts to the contours of your foot via adaptive lacing technology – providing a personal, customized fit that makes it feel like an extension of your body. “Innovation at Nike is not about dreaming of tomorrow. It’s about accelerating toward it,” says Tinker Hatfield. Vice President of Creative Concepts, NIKE, Inc. “Sometimes, we deliver a reality before others have even begun to imagine it.” That reality manifests itself in the form of the limited edition Nike HyperAdapt 1.0.

“When you step in, your heel will hit a sensor and the system will automatically tighten,” explains Tiffany Beers, Senior Innovator, NIKE, Inc., and the project’s technical lead. “Then there are two buttons on the side to tighten and loosen. You can adjust it until it’s perfect.”

Beers began exploring the mechanics of a shoe like the HyperAdapt 1.0 after first meeting with Hatfield, who dreamed of making adaptive lacing a reality. He asked if she wanted to figure it out — not a replication of a preexisting idea but as “the first baby step to get to a more sophisticated place.” The project caught the attention of NIKE, Inc. President & CEO Mark Parker, who helped guide the design as a third collaborator.

The potential of adaptive lacing for the athlete is huge according to Hatfield, as it allows tailored-to-the-moment custom fit. “It is amazing to consider a shoe that senses what the body needs in real-time. That eliminates a multitude of distractions, including mental attrition, and thus truly benefits performance.” In November, Hatfield stopped by the newly opened Nike Soho store to talk about the innovative design via a hands-on demonstration of the sneaker’s adaptive lacing technology.
